Pyaasa is a 1957 Hindi-language film directed by, produced by and starring Guru Dutt, following an unsuccessful poet, Vijay, whose work is rejected by publishers during his life and only celebrated after he is mistakenly declared dead. Its songs, composed by S. D. Burman with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi, became some of the most enduring in Hindi cinema, and the film's critique of commercial indifference to art drew on Dutt's own frustrations with the Bombay film industry. It was named by Time magazine as one of the all-time 100 best films in a 2005 retrospective list and is widely regarded as one of the defining works of Guru Dutt's career and of 1950s Indian cinema.
