Ikiru

World and International Narrative Cinema

Ikiru is a 1952 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa, following a longtime Tokyo municipal bureaucrat who, upon learning he has terminal stomach cancer, searches for meaning in the months he has left and ultimately devotes his remaining energy to pushing a small children's playground through the city's indifferent bureaucracy. The film contrasts the emotional numbness of the protagonist's decades of routine office work with his late, quietly determined pursuit of one concrete, lasting act, a structure Kurosawa built around an unconventional narrative that reveals much of its resolution before the story's end. Ikiru is widely regarded as one of Kurosawa's finest films and a landmark of humanist postwar Japanese cinema.
