El Mariachi is a 1992 Spanish-language independent neo-Western action film, the feature directorial debut of Robert Rodriguez, who made it on a production budget of roughly 7,225 dollars intending it for the Mexican home-video market before Columbia Pictures purchased distribution rights and invested about 200,000 dollars in post-production. The film follows a traveling mariachi musician, played by Carlos Gallardo, who is mistaken for an escaped convict in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Acuna. It received critical acclaim, led to two sequels starring Antonio Banderas, was selected for the National Film Registry in 2011, and holds a Guinness World Record as the lowest-budgeted film ever to gross more than one million dollars at the box office.
