Dancer in the Dark is a 2000 musical tragedy directed by Lars von Trier, an international co-production involving Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. Set in 1960s Washington State, it follows Selma Jezkova, a Czech immigrant factory worker played by the musician Bjork, who is going blind and works to save money for an operation to prevent her young son from inheriting her degenerative eye condition, escaping into daydreamed musical numbers before a murder charge leads to her execution. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, and Bjork won the festival's Best Actress award; its song I've Seen It All received an Academy Award nomination. Critics were divided on its narrative but praised its stylistic innovation, and it has since been ranked among the notable films of the twenty-first century.
