Bicycle Thieves is a 1948 Italian film directed by Vittorio De Sica and widely regarded as the best known work of Italian neorealism, a movement that had informally begun three years earlier with Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City. It received an Academy Honorary Award in 1950, and in Sight and Sound magazine's 1952 poll of filmmakers and critics it was named the greatest film ever made; it has remained in the poll's rankings since, placing 33rd among critics and 10th among directors in the 2012 edition. Roger Ebert later wrote that it is so well entrenched as an official masterpiece that it is startling to revisit it and realize it is still alive.
