Pelle the Conqueror

Pelle the Conqueror is a 1987 Danish and Swedish co-production directed by Bille August, starring Max von Sydow. It follows a Swedish father and his young son who emigrate to the Danish island of Bornholm in the late 1850s after the mother's death, seeking a new life but instead facing mistreatment, discrimination and hardship on the farm where they find work. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for best foreign language film.
