Miracle in Milan

Miracle in Milan is a 1951 Italian fantasy comedy directed by Vittorio De Sica, with a screenplay by De Sica and Cesare Zavattini based on Zavattinis own novel Toto il Buono. It follows Toto, a cheerful orphan raised by a kind elderly woman in post-World War II Milan, who after her death settles among the residents of a shantytown on the citys outskirts and helps turn the settlement into a genuine community. The story turns fantastical when oil is discovered beneath the shantytown and a wealthy businessman tries to evict the squatters. The film won the Grand Prize, later known as the Palme dOr, at the 1951 Cannes Film Festival and was named Best Foreign Language Film by the New York Film Critics Circle the same year.
