L'Avventura is a 1960 Italian film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Gabriele Ferzetti and Monica Vitti, following a group of wealthy friends on a yachting trip during which a young woman disappears on a remote island, and the search for her that gradually turns into a hesitant affair between her boyfriend and her best friend. The film was famously booed at its Cannes Film Festival premiere for its slow pacing and refusal to resolve its central mystery, but was defended there in a statement signed by prominent filmmakers and critics and later went on to be recognized as a landmark of modernist cinema and a defining statement of Antonioni's style of alienation and ambiguity.
