The Legend of the Holy Drinker is a 1988 Italian drama directed by Ermanno Olmi, adapted from Joseph Roth's 1939 novella of the same name and starring Rutger Hauer as Andreas, a homeless alcoholic in Paris who repeatedly resolves to repay a borrowed sum of money and repeatedly spends it on drink instead. The film won the Golden Lion for best film at the Venice Film Festival.
