Three Colours: Red

World and International Narrative Cinema

Three Colours: Red is a 1994 film directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski, a France, Poland and Switzerland co-production and the final installment of his Three Colours trilogy, each film built around one color of the French flag and the revolutionary ideal it represents, red standing for fraternity. The story follows Valentine, a young model in Geneva, whose life becomes entangled with a retired judge, Joseph, after she accidentally hits his dog with her car, and their unlikely friendship gradually reveals an eerie set of parallels between the judge's past and the life of a young law student living nearby. The film received three Academy Award nominations including Best Director, is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of the 1990s, and was Kieslowski's last completed work before his death less than two years after its release.
