The Artist

The Artist is a 2011 French film written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius, shot as a largely silent, black and white feature set in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932. It follows George Valentin, a celebrated silent film star whose career collapses with the arrival of talking pictures, and Peppy Miller, a young dancer whose star rises through the same transition, as their paths cross and intertwine. Jean Dujardin starred as Valentin opposite Berenice Bejo as Peppy. Shot largely without dialogue at the accelerated silent-era rate of twenty two frames per second, the film won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Dujardin at the 2012 Academy Awards, becoming the first predominantly silent film to win Best Picture since Wings in 1927 and the first entirely black and white winner since The Apartment in 1960.
