Germany, Year Zero is a 1948 Italian neorealist film directed by Roberto Rossellini, a co-production with France and Germany. Set in the ruins of postwar Berlin, it follows twelve-year-old Edmund Kohler, who poisons his ailing father under the influence of ideas from his former Nazi teacher and then takes his own life out of guilt and isolation. Filmed on location with nonprofessional actors, it won the Golden Leopard and Best Director awards at the 1948 Locarno International Film Festival.
