A Man Escaped is a 1956 French prison film directed by Robert Bresson, based on the memoir of Andre Devigny, a French Resistance member who escaped German captivity at Montluc prison in Lyon in 1943. It follows Fontaine, a fictionalized version of Devigny, as he methodically prepares his escape by carving through his cell door and fashioning rope from bedding and wire. Made with nonprofessional actors in a minimalist style, it won the Best Director award at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival and is regarded as one of the finest films Bresson ever made.
