The 39 Steps (1935 film)

World and International Narrative Cinema

The 39 Steps is a 1935 British spy thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll, loosely based on John Buchan's 1915 novel The Thirty-Nine Steps. It follows Richard Hannay, a Canadian civilian in London who becomes entangled in an effort to stop an organization called the 39 Steps from stealing British military secrets, going on the run to Scotland after being wrongly accused of murder. Since its release the film has been widely regarded as a classic; Orson Welles called it a masterpiece, and screenwriter Robert Towne remarked that most contemporary escapist entertainment traces back to it.
