The Woman and the Stranger

The Woman and the Stranger is a 1985 East German film directed by Rainer Simon, adapted from Leonhard Frank's novella Karl und Anna and produced by DEFA-Studio in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Set around the First World War, it follows two prisoners of war, one of whom escapes and falls in love with his friend's wife before the friend returns home at war's end; the film is a sound remake of the 1928 silent film Homecoming. It won the Golden Bear at the 35th Berlin International Film Festival.
