The Leopard (1963 film)

The Leopard is a 1963 Italian historical drama directed by Luchino Visconti, adapted from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusas 1958 novel of the same name, starring Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale. Set during the Risorgimento, it follows an aging Sicilian prince, Don Fabrizio Corbera, as Garibaldis forces overturn the islands traditional aristocratic order and he confronts the inevitability of social change. The film won the Palme dOr at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, and although its United States release suffered from a poorly edited English-language cut, it is now widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
