The Cranes Are Flying

World and International Narrative Cinema

The Cranes Are Flying is a 1957 Soviet war drama directed by Mikhail Kalatozov at Mosfilm, adapted by Viktor Rozov from his own play. It follows a romantic relationship broken apart by World War II, known in the Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War, and the lasting toll the conflict takes on those left behind. The film won the Palme dOr at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival, the only Soviet film ever to do so, with lead actress Tatiana Samoilova receiving a special festival commendation for her performance.
