The Celebration

World and International Narrative Cinema

The Celebration, released in Danish as Festen, is a 1998 Danish black comedy-drama directed by Thomas Vinterberg and produced by Nimbus Film, which premiered at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival before its Danish release in June that year. The story follows a family gathered at a hotel to celebrate patriarch Helge's sixtieth birthday, a celebration upended when his eldest son Christian publicly accuses him of having sexually abused Christian and his twin sister as children, unleashing denial and confrontation among the assembled family. Shot on a consumer video camera for a budget of about 1.3 million dollars, it was the first film released under the Dogme 95 movement founded by Vinterberg and Lars von Trier, and it won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was Denmark's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
