Pan's Labyrinth is a 2006 Spanish language dark fantasy film written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, a Spanish and Mexican co-production set in Falangist Spain in 1944, several years after the end of the Spanish Civil War. It follows a young girl named Ofelia who, after moving with her pregnant mother to live with her new stepfather, a sadistic army officer hunting anti-Franco guerrillas, encounters a faun who tells her she is the reincarnation of an underworld princess and sets her three dangerous tasks. The film won three Academy Awards, for Art Direction, Cinematography and Makeup, and is widely praised for blending brutal historical realism with dark fairy tale fantasy.
