Man of Iron

World and International Narrative Cinema

Man of Iron is a 1981 Polish film directed by Andrzej Wajda, a sequel to his earlier Man of Marble. It follows Maciej Tomczyk, son of the earlier film's protagonist, as he leads a shipyard strike in Gdansk that becomes part of the Solidarity labor movement's first success in winning the Polish government's recognition of an independent union, while a radio journalist sent to investigate him is drawn toward the strikers' cause. The film won the Palme d'Or and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival.
