Breathless (French: A bout de souffle) is a 1960 French film and the directorial debut of Jean-Luc Godard, following a small-time criminal and an American woman living in Paris. The film became a defining work of the French New Wave, the loose movement of young French directors and critics, including Godard and fellow former Cahiers du Cinema writer Francois Truffaut, who broke from conventional studio filmmaking practice in the late 1950s and 1960s. Breathless is especially noted for Godard's use of jump cuts, an editing technique that visibly skips forward within a continuous shot rather than concealing the cut, which was unconventional at the time and became one of the film's most widely imitated stylistic innovations.
