The Hidden Fortress is a 1958 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa, following two bumbling peasants who are recruited, without fully understanding the danger, to escort a disguised princess and a general carrying a hidden fortune of gold safely across hostile territory. The film tells much of its story from the perspective of its two lowly, self-interested peasant characters rather than its noble protagonists, an unusual narrative choice for an adventure film of its scale. The Hidden Fortress is widely known for its direct influence on George Lucas's Star Wars, whose robot characters C-3PO and R2-D2 and framing of events through low-ranking characters both draw on Kurosawa's film.
