Capernaum (2018 film)

Capernaum is a 2018 Lebanese drama directed by Nadine Labaki, starring non-professional actors including Zain Al Rafeea, himself a Syrian refugee, in the lead role of Zain, a twelve-year-old living in the slums of Beirut. Told through flashbacks from a courtroom where Zain is suing his own parents for neglect, the film follows his life on the streets, including his relationship with an Ethiopian migrant worker and her infant son. It premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival to a lengthy standing ovation and won the Jury Prize there, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and became the highest-grossing Arabic-language film ever made, with a large share of its worldwide gross coming from an unexpected box-office success in China.
