Yi Yi

Yi Yi is a 2000 Taiwanese drama film written and directed by Edward Yang, following three generations of a middle class Taipei family across roughly a year marked by a wedding, an illness, a birth and a death. Its episodic, unhurried structure follows several family members in parallel, most memorably the youngest son, who takes photographs of the backs of people's heads because he says they cannot otherwise see that part of themselves. The film won Yang the Best Director award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and is widely regarded by film critics as one of the major achievements of Taiwanese cinema and one of the finest films of its decade.
