Parasite is a 2019 South Korean film directed by Bong Joon Ho, in which members of an impoverished family scheme their way one by one into employment inside the household of a wealthy family while concealing their relationship to one another, with escalating and violent consequences. The film became the first Korean film to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, winning by unanimous jury vote, and it went on to win four Academy Awards including Best Picture, the first non English language film ever to win that award. It grossed more than 258 million dollars worldwide against a budget of roughly 11 million dollars, and its success is widely credited with drawing new international attention to Korean cinema.
