High and Low is a 1963 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa. A wealthy executive preparing a corporate takeover receives a ransom demand for his son, only to learn the kidnapper mistakenly seized the child of his own chauffeur instead; when he pays the ransom anyway, the film shifts to the police investigation that follows. Contrasting the hilltop mansion of the executive with the slum below, it is regarded as an influential work of police-procedural cinema and a study of class division in postwar Japan.
