Gate of Hell is a 1953 Japanese film directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa, set during the Heiji Rebellion, about a warrior who tries to marry a woman he has rescued only to learn she is already married. Shot in Eastmancolor, it was Daiei Films first color production and the first Japanese color film released internationally, starring Kazuo Hasegawa and Machiko Kyo. The film won the Palme dOr at the 1954 Cannes Film Festival and went on to win two Academy Awards, for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design, as well as the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival and a New York Film Critics Circle award.
