Touki Bouki is a 1973 Senegalese film written and directed by Djibril Diop Mambety, following Mory, a cattle herder who rides a motorcycle adorned with cattle horns and skulls, and his university-student girlfriend Anta as they scheme, through theft and deception, to raise enough money to leave Dakar for what they imagine as a better life in Paris. Its title translates roughly from Wolof as the hyena's journey, and its fractured, non-linear style broke sharply from both Hollywood convention and the more didactic African cinema of the period. It won the International Critics' Prize at the 1973 Moscow International Film Festival and is widely regarded as one of the most influential African films ever made.
