Roma is a 2018 Mexican film written, directed, produced, photographed and co-edited by Alfonso Cuaron, a semi-autobiographical account of his own childhood in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City told through the eyes of an indigenous Mixtec live-in housekeeper working for a middle class family in the early 1970s. Netflix acquired the film's distribution rights and released it in a combination of limited theatrical screenings and streaming, making it one of the highest profile films to test the boundary between theatrical and streaming distribution. The film received ten Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and won three, becoming the first Mexican film to win Best Foreign Language Film, with Cuaron winning both Best Director and Best Cinematography for the same film in the same year.
