Chungking Express

Chungking Express is a 1994 Hong Kong film directed by Wong Kar-wai, made quickly on a low budget during a break in production on another project, told as two loosely connected stories about lovesick police officers in Hong Kong. The first follows a heartbroken officer known as Cop 223, who copes with a recent breakup by buying cans of pineapple with a set expiration date while crossing paths with a mysterious woman involved in drug smuggling, and the second follows Cop 663, who is unknowingly watched over by a quirky snack bar worker after his own breakup. Shot with handheld cameras and a step-printing technique that blurs motion in the frame, the film's loose, melancholy visual style became one of the defining looks of 1990s world cinema and has been cited as an influence by later filmmakers including Barry Jenkins.
