To Live is a 1994 Chinese and Taiwanese drama directed by Zhang Yimou, adapting Yu Hua's novel of the same name to follow one family across four decades of upheaval in twentieth century China, from the civil war through the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. The film won the Grand Prix and a Best Actor award at Cannes and the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, but its critical portrayal of Communist-era policy led to it being banned in mainland China, where it became one of the most widely taught Chinese-language films in universities abroad despite that ban.
