Why does Inside Out show only five emotions in Riley's mind?
The team began with about 27 emotions and cut them for simplicity, dropping surprise and contempt from Ekman's list of seven.
The filmmakers started with far more. About 27 emotions were considered for early versions, and the number was later reduced for the sake of simplicity. The psychologist Paul Ekman supplied a list of seven emotions: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, contempt, surprise and happiness. Director Pete Docter removed surprise because it was too similar to fear, and he also removed contempt. Happiness was renamed Optimism and later Joy, which left Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust.
