Silent films made by Black American filmmakers for Black audiences, outside the Hollywood studios, above all the work of Oscar Micheaux, whose films answered the racist depictions of Black life in mainstream cinema. A work belongs here when its article ties it to Micheaux or to race cinema. It excludes mainstream Hollywood silents. Works are placed by what their cited article states about their country, form and period, and each work sits in exactly one group of this subcategory, so a film that fits two traditions goes where its article places it first.
