FAQs

Who wrote the screenplay of Casablanca?

Julius and Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch are credited, with uncredited rewrites by Casey Robinson.

Three writers are credited: the twin brothers Julius and Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch. The Epsteins were first assigned to the script, but they left early in 1942 to work on Frank Capra's Why We Fight series in Washington. Koch was assigned while they were gone and produced thirty to forty pages. The Epsteins returned after about a month and were reassigned to Casablanca. Casey Robinson, who is uncredited, assisted with three weeks of rewrites. The three credited writers were honored with the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
