Underground, also known by the subtitle Once Upon a Time There Was a Country, is a 1995 epic satirical war film directed by Emir Kusturica, an international co-production of Yugoslavia, France, Germany, the Czech Republic and Hungary. Using the friendship of two men as its frame, the film chronicles Yugoslav history from the outbreak of the Second World War through the onset of the Yugoslav Wars, following characters who remain hidden underground for decades believing the war above them is still being fought. It won the Palme d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, Kusturica's second Palme d'Or, and received widespread critical acclaim alongside substantial political controversy over its portrayal of Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian characters during the Balkan conflicts. It was submitted as Serbia's entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film but was not nominated.
