Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead is a 1990 period black comedy film written and directed by Tom Stoppard, adapting his own 1966 play of the same name, which itself draws on William Shakespeare's Hamlet. The film follows two minor characters from Shakespeare's tragedy, played by Gary Oldman and Tim Roth, as they travel to Elsinore Castle and become entangled in the events surrounding Prince Hamlet, grappling along the way with existential questions about fate and their own agency. Richard Dreyfuss appears as the Player. The film won the Golden Lion at the 47th Venice International Film Festival.
