Migrant Mother

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

Migrant Mother is a photograph taken by Dorothea Lange in 1936 while working for the United States Farm Security Administration, depicting Florence Owens Thompson, a mother of seven, at a pea pickers' camp in California during the Great Depression. Commissioned as part of a federal documentary photography program intended to build public support for relief programs, the image became one of the most recognized visual symbols of Depression-era hardship in the United States. Migrant Mother is widely regarded as one of the most iconic photographs in American history and a defining work of American documentary photography.
