Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life is a 1925 American silent documentary directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, following the Bakhtiari people of Persia on their seasonal migration across mountains and a wide river in search of grazing land for their herds. Shot without actors or staged scenes, largely on location amid the migration itself, the film was praised on release for its scale and its unusually direct ethnographic record of a nomadic pastoral culture. Cooper and Schoedsack went on to direct the fictional adventure film King Kong less than a decade later, and Grass is regarded by film historians as an important early example of feature length ethnographic documentary.
