The Princess Bride

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

The Princess Bride is a 1987 American fantasy adventure comedy directed by Rob Reiner, adapted by William Goldman from his own 1973 novel of the same name. Framed as a story read aloud by a grandfather to his sick grandson, it follows the farmhand Westley, played by Cary Elwes, as he sets out to rescue Princess Buttercup, played by Robin Wright, from a forced marriage to the villainous Prince Humperdinck, aided along the way by the swordsman Inigo Montoya, played by Mandy Patinkin, and the giant Fezzik, played by Andre the Giant. Modest at the box office on release, it became a widely quoted cult classic through home video.

It had only modest early box office success but grew into a cult classic.

Not at first. The film had only modest box office success on release in 1987, but it became a cult film over time and is now regarded as one of the greatest films of the 1980s. It won the 1988 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the People's Choice Award at the 12th Toronto International Film Festival, and in 2016 the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
