Divorce Italian Style is a 1961 Italian comedy directed by Pietro Germi, starring Marcello Mastroianni as a Sicilian nobleman who, unable to divorce under Italian law at the time, schemes to arrange his wife's adultery so he can murder her and claim the lenient legal defense of a crime of honor. The film satirizes Italian marriage law, aristocratic decline and small town hypocrisy through dark comic exaggeration rather than direct social commentary. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and is credited with helping popularize the commedia all'italiana genre of Italian film comedy.
