Maya Deren, born Eleonora Solomonovna Derenkovskaya, was a Russian-born American experimental filmmaker and an important part of the avant-garde in the 1940s and 1950s, who lived from 29 April 1917 to 13 October 1961. She was also a choreographer, dancer, film theorist, poet, lecturer, writer and photographer. She believed the function of film was to create an experience, and she combined her expertise in dance, ethnography and symbolist poetry in a series of perceptual black-and-white short films.
