In the Name of the Father

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

In the Name of the Father is a 1993 biographical drama directed by Jim Sheridan, an Ireland-United Kingdom-United States co-production starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Gerry Conlon, Pete Postlethwaite as his father Giuseppe, and Emma Thompson as the lawyer Gareth Peirce. It dramatizes the wrongful conviction of the Guildford Four for the 1974 Guildford pub bombings, following Conlon's imprisonment, torture and forced confession and his father's fight for justice that eventually led to their exoneration in 1989. The film won the Golden Bear for best film at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1994.
