Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author who lived from 11 June 1910 to 25 June 1997. He co-invented the first successful open-circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, called the Aqua-Lung, which helped him produce some of the first underwater documentaries. His book The Silent World was adapted into an underwater documentary of the same name, co-directed with Louis Malle, and World Without Sun is listed here as a work.
