Fantastic Four #1

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

Fantastic Four #1 is a comic book published by Marvel Comics in 1961, written and edited by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, introducing the team of Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing, whose powers derive from their exposure to cosmic rays during an unauthorized experimental spaceflight. The issue is widely credited as the starting point of the modern Marvel Comics line, establishing a more grounded, interpersonally flawed model of superhero team storytelling in place of the more uniformly heroic conventions of earlier comics. Fantastic Four #1 is regarded by comics historians as one of the most consequential single issues in the history of the American superhero genre.
