Diary of a Lost Girl

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Diary of a Lost Girl is a 1929 German silent film directed by G. W. Pabst, starring Louise Brooks as a pharmacist's daughter whose life is upended after a sexual assault leaves her pregnant, and who is subsequently sent to a punitive reform institution before drifting into prostitution and eventually a more stable, if compromised, adult life. The film was Brooks's second and final collaboration with Pabst after their earlier Pandora's Box, and like that film it was cut or banned in various countries on its release for its frank treatment of sexuality and institutional cruelty. Diary of a Lost Girl is regarded by critics as one of the more clear-eyed studies of a young woman's social vulnerability made in the late silent era, noted for a directness that became far less common in mainstream cinema once censorship codes tightened in the years that followed.
