The Merry Widow

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

The Merry Widow is a 1925 American silent film directed by Erich von Stroheim for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, following a dancer named Sally who is rejected by a prince's royal family for her common birth and marries an elderly baron instead, before the baron's death and a chain of court intrigue, including an assassination and a duel, clears the way for the prince to inherit the throne and reunite with her. Distributed by the newly formed MGM, the film was both a critical and commercial success, reportedly earning around 758,000 dollars in profit, and featured brief uncredited early appearances by future stars Joan Crawford and Clark Gable. Contemporary critics credited von Stroheim with drawing an unexpectedly strong performance from star Mae Murray, and the film remains a notable example of his lavish studio-era visual style.
