V-J Day in Times Square

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

V-J Day in Times Square is a photograph taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt on August 14, 1945 and published in Life magazine, depicting a United States Navy sailor kissing a woman in Times Square amid celebrations of Japan's surrender ending the Second World War. Neither the sailor nor the woman was formally identified by the photographer at the time, and the identities of the pair have since been the subject of extensive, sometimes disputed, later research and claims. V-J Day in Times Square is widely regarded as one of the most reproduced and instantly recognizable photographs of the twentieth century and an enduring symbol of the end of the war.
