Umberto D.

World and International Narrative Cinema

Umberto D. is a 1952 Italian neorealist drama directed by Vittorio De Sica, following an elderly, impoverished pensioner in Rome struggling to avoid eviction from his rented room, accompanied only by his small dog, Flike. De Sica considered it his own finest work, using nonprofessional actors and an unsentimental, close observation of poverty and aging typical of Italian neorealism. It received a New York Film Critics Circle award and is regarded as one of the defining films of the neorealist movement.
