The Golem: How He Came into the World

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

The Golem: How He Came into the World is a 1920 German silent horror film directed by and starring Paul Wegener, with Carl Boese, based on Gustav Meyrink's telling of the Jewish folk legend of a clay figure brought to life to protect a sixteenth-century Prague ghetto. The film depicts a rabbi who animates the golem using a mystical incantation, only for the creature's power to become increasingly uncontrollable and dangerous as the story proceeds. Made at the height of German Expressionist filmmaking, with heavily stylized angular sets, the film is the only surviving installment of a golem trilogy Wegener made across the 1910s and is widely regarded as one of the foundational works of the horror genre and of German Expressionist cinema.
