Les Vampires

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Les Vampires is a French silent crime serial directed by Louis Feuillade, released in ten episodes of varying length between 1915 and 1916, following a journalist's investigation into a criminal secret society called the Vampires, led by a masked figure named Irma Vep. Its serial structure, mixing crime-thriller plotting with dreamlike, proto-surrealist imagery, influenced later French filmmakers, and it followed Feuillade's earlier Fantomas serial in helping establish the conventions of the French crime serial. Musidora's performance as Irma Vep, in a form-fitting black bodysuit, became one of the most recognizable images of French silent cinema.
